Investment Nerds
Investing platform for Ghanaians at home and abroad, combining portfolio tracking, an investor community, and learning tools to help users at every level grow their wealth

Investment Nerds is an all-in-one investing platform for Ghanaians and the Ghanaian diaspora. It brings together three things investors usually have to find in separate places: a portfolio tracker, an investor community, and a structured learning system. It's built for everyone from complete beginners taking their first steps to experienced investors managing diverse portfolios, meeting each user where they are and growing with them
The challenge
Most investing platforms and educational resources are built for Western markets, leaving Ghanaians to translate generic advice into their own reality. Investors at home navigating options like treasury bills, stocks, and mutual funds, and those abroad looking to invest back home, often rely on scattered information, word of mouth, and a patchwork of spreadsheets and group chats. I wanted to build a single platform where Ghanaian investors can learn concepts relevant to their market, track their portfolios, and connect with a community that shares their context, whether they're in Accra or London.
What I built
I designed, developed, and wrote the content for Investment Nerds end to end. The portfolio tracker lets users log and monitor their investments with a clear overview of performance and allocation. The community space connects investors across Ghana and the diaspora to share insights and ask questions, with real-time interactions powered by Socket.IO. A learning management system with structured courses, taking users from foundational concepts to advanced strategies, is planned for a future version of the platform. On the frontend, I used React with Vite for a fast development experience and quick load times, Redux to manage complex state across the tracker and community, and Tailwind CSS with shadcn/ui to build a clean, consistent interface. The backend runs on NestJS with PostgreSQL for reliable relational data like users, portfolios, and community activity, and Redis for caching and supporting real-time features so the platform stays responsive as activity grows. The architecture was designed with future expansion in mind, so upcoming features like the learning system can be added without major rework
Design approach
Finance apps often feel either intimidating or gimmicky. I aimed for an interface that feels trustworthy and calm, with clear data visualisation, plain-language labels, and a layout that lets beginners explore without feeling overwhelmed while giving experienced users the depth they expect
